Buc-ees: Top 10 Items From The World’s Best Gas Station

Buc-ees

Buc-ees is quickly becoming a name that stands out among the vast landscape of roadside attractions. From pit stop to TikTok trend, this Texan born phenomenon, is more than just a “pass through” along the highway, for anyone who has had the pleasure —it’s an experience in itself. The beaver mascot you can see from the highway to the hundreds of gas pumps, massive stores and famously clean restrooms (for reals), Buc-ees has carved out a unique place in American travel culture.

What Is Buc-ees?

A bit of a loaded question, for sure, as Buc-ees is not, for all intents and purposes, any one thing. What sets Buc-ee’s apart from your average gas station or convenience store is that it is neither/both/more. Walking into a Buc-ee’s is like stepping into a wonderland of in-house snacks, foods, and quirky souvenirs. The sheer size of these stores is staggering, some stretching over 60,000 square feet, making them some of the largest convenience stores in the world. Imagine if a rest stop was swallowed by a Cracker Barrel and showed up as a Disney World attraction. Now you have a very high level idea of what we are dealing with.

Buc-ees also takes pride in its commitment to cleanliness. The restrooms at Buc-ees have achieved legendary status, consistently earning top marks for their cleanliness and comfort. It’s not uncommon to hear travelers rave about their restroom experiences at Buc-ees, with some even going so far as to say they plan their road trips around stopping at these pristine facilities.

There’s also no shortage of treasures to be found in the aisles of Buc-ee’s. Whether you’re in the market for a novelty mug or a plush beaver toy, chances are you’ll find it here. And of course, no trip to Buc-ee’s would be complete without picking up a few items emblazoned with the iconic beaver logo—a symbol of quality and hospitality to travelers far and wide.

But it’s not just about size and cleanliness; it (as well as this article) is also about their food selection.

Buc-ee’s boasts an impressive array of snacks and goodies that cater to every taste imaginable. From freshly made fudge to a wall of beef jerky in every flavor imaginable, to in-house smoked brisket and pulled pork – there’s something to satisfy every craving. Which brings us to the heart of things…

Buc-ees: 10 Best Items You Need to Try (in no particular order)

10. Chips

In true convenience store fashion, Buc-ees is home to rows of chips; your Doritos, Pringles, Lays, what have you. Whatever your preferred brand they are sure to have it.

However, what I am specifically referring to is Buc-ees in house brand of chips, onion rings and pork rinds…and more specifically, their fresh made, near-perfectly seasoned kettle chips: Beaver Chips. Sold by the greasy paper bag (which makes a difference), my 11yr old daughter is a fiend for them. She tells me they’re “bussin” – which I think mans good!

If you find yourself in a Buc-ees, don’t pass on these.

9. Beaver Nuggets

I’m not sure how to say this and save face, so I am just going to say it: I literally have a bag of Beaver Nuggets in my lap as I write this. By all indications, I shouldn’t even like them – they are puffed corn treats flavored with caramel, and taste very similar to caramel popcorn, which I am not a huge fan of. These are different, though, I can’t put my finger on what makes them unique to caramel popcorn, and I can’t help but indulge…they’re delicious. The Buc-ees staple, and signature item also come in Sea Salt and Caramel as well as Cinnamon Sugar (which, I shamefully have not yet tried, but am eager to do so).

8. Buc-ees Nug-ees

Not to be confused with their sweet cousin, Beaver Nuggets, Buc-ees Nug-ees offer the same puffed corn, this time with savory flavor profiles. These can be found in varieties, such as, Bold & Spicy, White Cheddar and, my go-to White Cheddar Habanero.

7. Smoked Meats/Bar-B-Que

You read it right. I did mention that Buc-ees originated in Texas, yes? As you explore the store, you will not be able to miss the unmistakable aroma of meats being smoked, as well as the chorus of “Freeeeesh brisket on the board!” emanating throughout, every 3 minutes or so.
You also read that right. A brisket every few minutes. They are pumping them out, and selling them quickly.
In addition to brisket, they are serving pulled pork, turkey, sausage and other smoked items sold in a variety of ways, from sandwich to plate to taco…and trust, they’re all bussin’.

I think I used that correctly.

7. Breakfast Tacos

Picture if you will, the aforementioned smoked meats, paired with egg and a myriad of other accoutrement (think: green chile, cheese potatoes, etc) wrapped in a tortilla. Hot and fresh, and delicious.

6. Burritos

See number 7 but increase the size and fillings. These burritos are bad, in the best way.

5. Buc-ees House-Made Fudge

Buc-ees dedicates an entire counter and Team Member to their homemade fudge. Offering just about every flavor you can think of and, of course, samples – this is a stop you will satiate your sweet tooth something proper.

4. Kolache

Do you know what a kolache is? Don’t be ashamed, I didn’t either. The oft savory, meat filled donut is a big deal in Texas and you can find them on the top shelf of the bakery case (which I was tempted to give its own slot on this list) of every Buc-ees. Definitely worth a try. If, for no other reason, you may be hard pressed to find them elsewhere. They do offer them in a sweet version, as well, if that’s your preference.

3. Buc-ees Banana Pudding

What’s not to love? Creamy layers of vanilla pudding, fresh bananas, and fluffy whipped cream brought together to create a dessert that’s both comforting and indulgent. Served in generous full-cup portions, the banana pudding at Buc-ees evokes memories of homemade treats from grandma’s kitchen and satisfies with each bite. A delightful offering that leaves taste buds longing for more and a testament to the simple pleasures found in unexpected places along the open road.

2. Hot Sauce

(Seemingly) hundreds of flavors of hot sauce can’t be a bad thing, right? If you fancy yourself a connoisseur (like I do), you’re sure to find something that fits your needs EACH time you go.

1. Jerky

OK. I know that I said that this list was in no particular order. That being said – this aptly labeled number one is the MAIN reason I will stop in ANY Buc-ees ANY time we come across one. Yes, they have an entire wall of packaged jerky – everything from beef to turkey and all in between. However, the real move, is going to the jerky station and ordering it fresh. A ton of flavors to choose from, across multiple proteins. Try a few (a small piece will run you $3-5), Specifically, try the Bohemian Garlic. Hands down, the best beef jerky I have ever had the pleasure of sinking my teeth into. You will not be disappointed.

Buc-ees is more than just a rest stop—it’s an institution and an experience (not to be missed). With its vast selection of snacks, impeccable cleanliness, and sense of community, Buc-ees has earned its place in the hearts of travelers everywhere. So the next time you find yourself on the open road, be sure to keep an eye out for that iconic beaver sign—you never know what treasures await you inside the world of Buc-ees.
