“The unforeseen does not exist.”
Phileas J. Fogg of Mr. Fogg’s
When Phileas Fogg, the unflappable protagonist of “Jules Verne’s Around The World In 80 Days”, uttered those words, it was a testament to his unshakable belief in logic and precision, emphasizing his methodical approach to life and challenges. The idea that nothing should be unexpected, if given enough thought, detailed planning and (in Fogg’s own words) mathematics. The irony of the tale, of course, is that his titular journey is riddled with nothing but unforeseen circumstances and, thusly, Mr. Fogg needs to lean into adaptability. This stark contrast between precision and the unpredictable is what makes the story a such a memorable classic.
It is also what makes the Mr. Fogg’s establishments of London such memorable experiences, and amongst the list of those you should be sure not to skip on your trip to The UK.
What is Mr. Fogg’s?
A mix, somewhere between the pubs London is famous for, the speakeasies of America’s past and Willy Wonka’s Whiskey Factory lies Mr. Fogg’s. A collection of establishments, all located throughout London, that is more than just a group of pubs – it’s a journey into the world of Phileas Fogg, the iconic character from Jules Verne’s “aforementioned masterpiece. A journey that offers a truly unique experience, transporting patrons back in time to the era of Victorian exploration and adventure, mathematics and whimsy. The perfect contrast of precision and the unpredictable.
Launched in 2013, by Inception Group, a hospitality group true to its name, the journey of Mr. Fogg’s began with Mr. Fogg’s Residence in Mayfair. Tucked away behind an unassuming door, Mr. Fogg’s Residence is an eclectic mix of antiques and artifacts collected from around the globe, mirroring the adventurer’s fictional travels. The ambiance is intimate and intriguing, with each nook telling a different story. The cocktail menu is as inventive as its setting, offering a range of exotic and meticulously crafted drinks. Mr. Fogg’s Residence provides a unique, immersive experience, blending the allure of historical adventure with the sophistication of a classic London bar.
Since the original opening, Mr. Fogg’s has expanded to a collection of TEN different experiences, all with the shared sensibilities of the first and all, likewise, completely unique and mutually exclusive to one another. Mr. Fogg’s Gin Parlour, Tavern and Society of Exploration (my personal favorite, and “home to the World’s first Mechanical Mixologist) are all stationed in Covent Garden, while Pawnbrokers, Hat Tavern and Gin Club can all be found in Soho. There is also House of Botanicals in Fitzrovia, City Tavern on Liverpool Street and finally, Apothecary (also in Mayfair).
One of the best things about these many locations, is that you can try to crawl them all in one visit or, my preference, include any you haven’t gotten to visit in your list of excuses to head back to the UK (I’m looking at you, City Tavern).
Pro Tip: Definitely call ahead and make reservations for your visit.
The Rigorous Whimsy of Mr. Fogg’s
To call Mr. Fogg’s an oxymoron would be a bit of an understatement. As is the novel of its inspiration, Mr. Fogg’s epitomizes oxymoronic themes. As you step through the doors of any of the establishments, you’re immediately whisked away to the 19th century, happily trapped between function and form, math and art…precision and the unpredictable.
While every experience at each of the Mr. Fogg’s locations may be different, you will most certainly be treated to an exquisite amalgamation of antiques, artifacts, and curiosities collected from all corners of the globe, echoing the travels of the fictional Mr. Fogg. The attention to detail is meticulous, from the vintage maps adorning the walls to the stuffed animals and exotic plants that seem to tell tales of distant lands, all while soulful renditions of your favorite contemporary songs are performed live. There is no shortage of things to look at and listen to at any of them.
An Eclectic Menu of Potations
Mr. Fogg’s is renowned for its “Adventurous Libations” as well as its extensive and imaginative cocktail menu. My reference to Willy Wonka, above, was no accident, each drink is a masterpiece, meticulously crafted with exotic ingredients and presented with theatrical flair. Whether you fancy a ‘Reform & Labour’, a delicate blend of gin, tea, and citrus, or the more adventurous ‘Phileas’s Fizz’, a concoction of rum, sparkling wine, and spiced syrup, there’s something to tantalize every palate. The bartenders, dressed in period costume, are not just mixologists; they are storytellers who add to the immersive experience with their knowledge of the drinks and the tales behind them.
Finally, if you happen upon Mr. Fogg’s Society of Exploration, you have the option of (and I suggest) The Mechanical Mixologist, a bittersweet blend of Bombay Sapphire Premier Cru gin, Martini Riserva Speciale Bitter aperitif and Martini Riserva Speciale Rubino vermouth, all put together with accuracy by a giant…well, Mechanical Mixologist really is the only way to describe it.
Events and Experiences at Mr. Fogg’s
Mr. Fogg’s isn’t just about sipping cocktails in an evocative setting. The establishment hosts a variety of events that further enhance the experience. From tipsy tea parties to gin tastings and themed evenings, each event is designed to transport guests to a bygone era of elegance and adventure. The immersive theatrical performances and live music evenings are particularly popular, adding an extra layer of entertainment to the already vibrant atmosphere.
